Leap Of Faith
One of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies deals with overcoming doubt by stepping out in faith. No, I’m not referring to the “Leap of Faith” movie starring Steve Martin. The scene most of you will recall is that of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Indy must cross a deep chasm to retrieve the cup which Jesus used at the Last Supper.
He must step off into thin air and walk across the divide. It looks impossible, but Indy takes the step of faith and his feet land on solid rock! Then the camera pans to show that there is a rock bridge that spans the divide that cannot be seen at first because it blends in perfectly with the opposing rock face of the cliff some 30 feet away.
Pretty cool, huh? But while many people will think that Indy gave up reason in favor of faith, Christians who come to believe in Jesus Christ do not really make that leap of faith. They don’t have to give up reason or intellect in order to believe. Coming to faith in Jesus does not mean we throw away logic.
My journey to faith in Christ started with deep skepticism and moved through a number of elements including history, archaeology, science, prophecy, and logic. It was a combination of these that brought me to the point of belief that Jesus was precisely who he said he was. The Son of God.
But there was one problem. Coming to that belief was not the same as coming to true faith in Christ. While Indiana Jones took his leap which went against all reason, I used my reason to finally believe who Jesus was. My problem was similar to many so called Christians (CINO’s) who have an intellectual understanding of our Lord but no faith.
About a year after I “believed”, I finally made Jesus Lord of my life. Now, looking back at that scene from the “Holy Grail”, I realize that I was not at all like Indiana Jones. I didn’t abandon my reason to step out and land on the ‘rock’, my logic told me the rock was there but I never took the next step.
What about you? Are you one who has come to believe that Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God but have never put your faith in him? Is he your Lord and Savior? Do you trust in him and him only? Do you believe the rock is there but have never placed your feet upon it? Faith isn’t knowing something—it’s doing what you believe.

FAITHBUILDER Hebrews 10:22
…let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
